Reniel Diaz – “Objects of Desire” – Project Room:

Artist Statement

The Work I create looks at gender relationships, examining stereotypes and preconceptions the viewer brings to images specific to sexual orientation.  The paintings explore the depth of sexuality in lush environments.  The final result for the viewer should be a walk through the subtlety and expansiveness that is sex.

Currently the paintings consist of collections of objects that represent a portrait of anindividual sexuality.  The particular imagery is culled from my personal desires as a child to play with porcelain figurines and antique statuettes instead of action figures.  I preferred flowers to sports.  With time, feminine objects soon gave way to a desire for real men.

As the objects and arrangements interchange they represent a fluidity of desire.  In many ways this is related to the decor of our homes and the people in our lives.  Things come and go and loved articles accumulate over time.  There is a sense of discovery and familiarity within the objects.
